What is your favorite part of working at The Bureaus, Inc.?

Hands down, my favorite part about working at The Bureaus is the employees. We are a tight-knit group that has worked together in the industry for many years. We have long-standing relationships both with each other and with colleagues around the industry.

In the receivables industry, what emerging trend has your attention?

Litigation always has my attention. Years ago, litigation used to focus on collector behavior, then it pivoted its focus to technological violations like what is defined as an ATDS. Now, we are at the point in time when the consumer’s attorneys have gotten really creative and scrutinize things like barcodes and vendor contracts.

What industry change do you predict over the next 5 years?

I think the pandemic created a large financial divide between those who were considered “essential workers” or those who were fortunate enough to still generate income if they were non-essential and those who were without any continuous income other than the stimulus checks. The housing and auto markets are forcing people to spend beyond their means for necessities (rent, mortgages, and used cars) and then creating budget prioritization issues for consumers left with little choice but to resort to using more and more credit.

How do you define success?

I think that as long as you enjoy what you do, then you will find success in it. Whether it is flipping burgers at a fast food restaurant or working as an executive at a Fortune 500 company, if you find enjoyment in what you are doing, then are you successful!

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received in life?

“What would you tell your best friend if they were in your situation? Be your own best friend.”

What advice would you give someone entering the receivables management industry?

If you are an agent, you have to have thick skin. Do not get discouraged from hearing no and find a way to be inviting enough to build rapport over the phone. If you are in management, be proactive instead of reactive. Always plan for the unexpected.

What are you most proud of?

I am proud of buying a home in the town I grew up in so my son can have the same sense of small town, community, and roots that I did.

What is your favorite podcast?

I don’t think I could pick just one! But my favorite genre of books and podcasts are the same: true crime. I do enjoy the Sword and Scale true-crime podcast, and I don’t think it gets the attention it probably deserves.

If you could do any other non-industry job for just one day, what would it be?

Hmmm, only for one day? I think I would be President of the United States – just kidding!

People would be surprised if they knew…

I currently have three roles within the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation: Licensed Cosmetologist, Licensed Foster Parent, and Board Member of the Collection Agency Board!
