Mark Naiman from ITP MDR, LLC on Executive Spotlight
What are your primary duties in your current role?
I create curated experiences for thought leaders within the Receivables Management space by coupling the discussion of hot topics and educational trends with uniquely produced conference experiences. I continue to maintain the relationships that I have built since I was a wee lad in the Receivables Management space, while trying to build new bridges between emerging vertical markets.
Industry Q&A:
How did you join the receivables industry?
Around age 18 or 19, I answered a part-time ad for CitiBank (or, rather, Commercial Credit as it was known at the time). After working there for about 1 year, I got laid off. Following the layoffs, my former manager called me. He had just started working at a debt buying company in San Diego and he wanted to bring me onto his new team. About 18 months later, the President of the debt buying firm, Mike Bendickson, started a new company, Absolute Services (which would soon become Absolute Resolutions Corp.) and asked me to be a part of that adventure!
In the receivables industry, what emerging trend has your attention?
A combination of three things:
- The ability of companies post-COVID to utilize both onshore and offshore staff in capacities outside of your standard “call center” model.
- The utilization of LLMs (Large Language Models) to assess massive sets of previously archived data as a means to better understand developing models and forecasts.
- The rising rate of delinquencies with fewer channels of liquidation.
What are your hopes for the receivables industry?
Continued steps towards true collaboration from a regulation perspective. I think we’ve come a long way in a decade, but we’ve still got a long way to go. These things always start with a conversation, and I hope my events can help to bridge that gap.
What is your favorite part of working at your company?
I really enjoy running my own company. There is a sense of freedom and unhinged creativity that comes with being my own boss.
Professional Motivation & Inspiration:
“One original thought is worth a thousand mindless quotings.” – Diogenes Laërtius
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received in life?
Perhaps the most important piece of advice was shared by a dear friend, and industry legend Michael A. Lagana: “Your reputation is the most important thing in this space, your word and your credibility remain the foundation of this ecosystem, especially considering the close relationships that exist amongst those that are reputationally conscious.”
What are you most proud of, or what is your biggest accomplishment?
I am most proud of the fact that after 30 years, my wife has not (understandably) murdered me in my sleep.
Personal Q&A:
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A Horror Movie Director!
If you work from home, what is the best thing about your home office setup/working from home? And if you work in an office, what is your favorite part of working in the office?
I actually prefer working in an office because my concentration and motivation is a lot higher in that setting. For those on the East Coast (or Overseas) you have no doubt spoken with me at my “home office” which is actually just a table in my backyard at 5:30 AM PST.
What is your favorite book, movie, TV show, podcast, or music genre?
I am physically incapable of answering this question directly for a host of totally unimportant reasons! I am a voracious reader of fiction; my movie tastes certainly lean towards the morbid, bizarre, or just plain weird; do people still watch TV?; and I like most music with the exception of modern country.
People would be surprised if they knew…
My wife is the sports lunatic fan/athlete in the house, I consider myself the “Math-lete.” I also have an extensive collection of vintage 90’s skateboard decks.
Do you have a pet? If so, what kind and what’s their name?
I have two Standard Dachshunds, Melvin and Treasure.
