Executive Spotlight with Matthew Wolk

Receivables Info Executive Spotlight with Matthew Wolk

What are your primary duties in your current role?

As a Senior Director in business development, I am primarily focused on helping debt buyers and collection agencies of all types — 3rd party, 1st party, legal, etc. — use authoritative data to improve liquidation performance and create efficiencies within their contact centers. Solutions range from helping to make outbound dialing more effective and efficient, providing authoritative consumer intelligence for creating engagement, and back-end data that allows for consistent CRM updates.

Industry Q&A:

How did you join the receivables industry?

I was a “repeat offender” of Capital One. Starting on the phones as a collector out of college during the spin-off from Signet Bank (dating myself for those that know), I left Capital One to pursue other paths. When I came back to Capital One in 1998, I was part of a group that was exploring the outsourcing of debt for collection which, as you all know, expanded quite rapidly. I have since stayed in and attached to the receivables industry ever since. After leaving Capital One, I worked with TRAKAmerica and then CBE Companies before arriving at Neustar which is now part of TransUnion.

In the receivables industry, what emerging trend has your attention?

As margins have thinned for agencies, finding ways to perform the tasks more efficiently and with less cost. Multi-channel communications with consumers have been a key part of that track.

What are your hopes for the receivables industry?

We need to continue to expand on the customer experience. The “bad taste” of a collection agency remains while SO many agencies have taken much different approaches to helping consumers resolve their situations. The change in demographic using credit has shifted to taking the marketing mindset of the consumers’ preference for engaging.

Creating engagement is key… the days of “smile and dial” are history.

What is your favorite part of working at your company?

The people!

When the news of the acquisition came to light, there is always that angst of a completely new environment and culture. Many legacy Neustar associates stayed and the conglomeration of teams has meshed so well that while the name has changed, the culture has remained consistent.

Professional Motivation & Inspiration:

Share a quote that motivates or inspires you:

“No matter how hard life hits you, you’ve got to get back up because no one is going to do it for you! Take that next step, no matter how small, because it’s a step in the right direction.” – Unknown

What is the best piece of advice you have ever received in life?

“Can’t” never did anything.

What are you most proud of, or what is your biggest accomplishment?

Two things…

1) Who I raised and how I am part of raising them to be better than me.

2) When I was at my lowest in life, I somehow found a way to dig back up to the surface to keep going.

Personal Q&A:

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Most won’t believe this but I had a fascination with being a truck driver, like big rig trucking. Not sure where it came from but always remember talking about that.

If you work from home, what is the best thing about your home office setup/working from home? And if you work in an office, what is your favorite part of working in the office?

Flexibility is such a generic answer; however, an important one. While I am afforded some level of flexibility, working from home also forces you to focus and be organized. I’ve had a home office for many years and it’s amazing how much you can get done in a more efficient way. Having worked in an office before, I do miss the comradery and consistent interaction with work friends.

What is your favorite book, movie, TV show, podcast, or music genre?

Favorite Music: I like all music genres. I’ve been exposed to many people with such good taste in music that there isn’t one that I truly dislike.

Favorite Movie: Gladiator

Favorite TV Show: So many to choose from and so many categories…Peaky Blinders, Ted Lasso, Yellowstone, Friends, the list goes on.

People would be surprised if they knew…

I was a Master Teaching Professional in golf for many years.

I can NOT stand the smell of vinegar.

I despise mayonnaise, mustard and pickles.

Do you have a pet? If so, what kind and what’s their name?

We have 6 animals in a 3-story house that apparently still isn’t big enough…smh:

Blonde Golden Retriever (F) – Barkley

Black Lab (F) – Roxie

Yellow Lab (M) – Archie

All three cats from the same litter but different colors – Sky (F), Jet (M), Sonny (F)

There are not enough available characters in this space to list all of their many nicknames.
