Receivables Spotlight with Stephen de Blanche
What are your primary duties in your current role?
I carry overall responsibility for the company’s revenue growth plan and oversee the sales, account management, sales enablement, and marketing teams within the company.
Industry Q&A:
How did you join the receivables industry?
I have been involved in the receivables industry since 2001 when I was appointed to lead the vehicle and asset finance business for one of the largest banks in South Africa. From there, I was appointed as Chief Operation Officer for a start-up business that provided vehicle finance and insurance for the pre-owned vehicle industry, catering specifically to people doing private sales. More recently, I led the sales organization for TransUnion in Africa, the largest credit bureau in Africa.
In the receivables industry, what emerging trend has your attention?
There are a number of very interesting trends emerging that will have a profound impact on the receivables industry, most notably AI. But the one that stands out the most for me is the advances in customer journey analytics, which is increasingly enabling personalization at scale.
What are your hopes for the receivables industry?
Apart from your more obvious factors such as improvements in transparency, trust, and ethical practices, my biggest hope is that we can collectively find a way to drive improved financial inclusion across the globe. The lack of access to financial services, and more specifically borrowing, is a major inhibitor to economic development and social upliftment for many countries.
What is your favorite part of working at your company?
Having the opportunity to service major international companies in the US, UK, and Australia whilst creating jobs and careers for people in South Africa, a country where high unemployment is a major challenge. At Nutun, we are also very focused on uplifting the communities in which our employees live through a range of programs that are aimed at closing the literacy gap for many less privileged people.
Professional Motivation & Inspiration:
Share a quote that motivates or inspires you:
“If you give yourself 30 days to clean your home, it will take you 30 days. But if you give yourself 3 hours, it will take you 3 hours. The same applies to your goals, ambitions and potential.” – Elon Musk
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received in life?
“If you find yourself in life having to choose between 2 paths, take the one that looks hardest…
It will be the least trodden and most rewarding.” This has led to much success in my life.
What are you most proud of, or what is your biggest accomplishment?
I would have to say my three daughters who are now all qualified, employed, and very successful in life. They are all completely different people but share the fact that they are all 3 highly self-motivated. I am very proud of them and what they have achieved in life so far.
Personal Q&A:
As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
For a while, I wanted to become an architect … And then I realized that I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body.
If you work from home, what is the best thing about your home office setup/working from home? And if you work in an office, what is your favorite part of working in the office?
I don’t particularly like working from home because I like interacting with people. Having said that, when I do work from home, I enjoy the fact that there are fewer interruptions. When I work from the office, I enjoy the benefit of not having to schedule a meeting to be able to talk to someone, I can simply walk down the passage and into their office/space. This is far more productive for creating solutions and solving problems.
What is your favorite book, movie, TV show, podcast, or music genre?
My favorite book that I have read in the past year is Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson. It has significantly changed the way that I think about the world around me and has made me more aware of some of the societal challenges that we face at the moment.
People would be surprised if they knew…
In my career, I have performed almost every role that typically exists at the C-suite level… except for HR. I have been very privileged to have been offered such a varied range of opportunities in my career.
Do you have a pet? If so, what kind and what’s their name?
I do not have any pets … My wife and I are “lock up and go” people, and it wouldn’t be fair to have a pet that we kept on abandoning.
