UK Driver Uses ChatGPT to Fight Parking Fine After Three-Year Dispute
A driver in the United Kingdom successfully challenged a parking charge after a three-year dispute with a private parking company, using ChatGPT to help prepare his legal defense and respond to debt collection demands.
According to an Oct. 9 report from UNN, Rafal Goral received a £100 parking charge from Smart Parking Limited after paying for parking 16 minutes after entering a car park in Newquay, Cornwall, in August 2023.
Goral said the payment machine would not accept his bank card, forcing him to download the RingGo parking app. Poor mobile reception reportedly delayed the process.
Debt Collection Demands Escalate
After Goral challenged the charge in September 2023, a debt collection company demanded £170. Over the following years, he received additional payment demands and warnings of potential legal action.
By 2026, the amount sought had reportedly increased to approximately £300, with a court hearing expected in October.
Rather than hire an attorney, Goral used ChatGPT to review correspondence, prepare responses to collection agencies, and draft a written defense for the court.
On Sept. 25, 2026, Goral received confirmation that the case had been closed and the parking charge canceled, weeks before the anticipated hearing.
AI’s Growing Role in Consumer Debt Disputes
The case illustrates how consumers may use generative AI tools to challenge payment demands, interpret collection correspondence, and prepare legal documents without traditional legal representation.
For debt collectors and receivables management professionals, the development highlights the possibility of receiving increasingly detailed, AI-assisted consumer disputes and legal responses.
However, the reported cancellation does not establish a legal precedent or confirm that a court ruled on the merits of Goral’s defense. ChatGPT is also not a licensed attorney, and AI-generated legal guidance can contain errors.
Goral said he continued fighting the charge because he believed it was unjustified, rather than because of the amount involved.
