Marian Sangalang, Vice President of The Bureaus, Inc. and President of Receivables Management Association International (RMAI), traveled to Washington DC from February 25-27, 2019. The purpose of the trip was to gain support for the Receivables Management industry and promote financial education and literacy tools recently released by the association at FinancialLiteracy.Rocks.

Mrs. Sangalang, Co-Chair of the RMAI Federal Legislative Committee, traveled to Capitol Hill with other members of the committee including Jan Stieger, Executive Director, James Mastriani, President-Elect, and Mark Naiman, Past President. The RMAI Federal Legislative Committee develops recommendations for RMAI positions on legislation and regulations at the federal level that affect the industry. Traveling to Washington DC, the committee met with numerous congressional offices and pertinent government agencies.

The Committee’s meetings established and reinforced vital relationships. The group dedicated time to initiating positive lines of communication with freshman members of Congress which will lay the groundwork for support of future legislation while reinforcing established connections with veteran members. Also meeting with executives from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), the Committee actively advocated for the best interests of the Receivables Management industry.

The Committee received high praise and support from all sides on the recent launch of RMAI’s new website, FinancialLiteracy.rocks, which provides education and resources on financial topics such as managing personal finance, money, investing, financial planning, debt management, saving, retirement, and managing expenses. The site’s wealth of information that can be searched by audience or topic was of special interest to members of Congress who, ultimately, care most about what is important to their constituents. Many Representatives expressed eagerness to share the information during financial literacy workshops and constituent meetings in their respective districts. Members of Congress were impressed with the website’s quality resources that benefit every consumer.

“Maintaining open lines of communication is a lifeline for our efforts on both the state and federal level,” says Marian Sangalang. “Having the opportunity to travel to our nation’s capital as a committee to actively advocate not just for RMAI, but also for our industry as a whole, is one of the most critical factors in defending and protecting our industry. The face-to-face meetings with members of Congress are important for gaining the support we need; having their undivided attention provides incomparable opportunities to share our message and build positive relationships that are crucial to our continued success.”
